5 INDIAN MATHEMATICIANS

1. Srinivasa Ramanujan

Srinivasa Ramanujan was a very big and great mathematician of India. He was born in Erode in Tamil Nadu in the year 1887. He was not going to a big college at the start, but he loved math very much from a young age. When he was a small boy, he was always doing sums and writing numbers in a notebook. He was not strong in other subjects, but in math he was like a genius person. Many teachers do not understand how he is doing such big sums so fast. He is finding many new formulas that nobody knew before.

Ramanujan’s life was a little hard because he was poor and did not have much money. But still he does not stop loving math. He sent a letter to one big professor in England, and that professor was very surprised by seeing his work. Then he goes to England and works there in a big university. He made many theorems and number ideas. Today also many people study his formulas in colleges and universities. He died very young at the age of 32, but his work is still alive. He shows that if we love something very much, we can become great even without many facilities.

2. Aryabhata

Aryabhata was a very old-time mathematician and astronomer of India. He was born in 476 AD. He wrote one big book, which was named Aryabhatiya. In that book he writes about math and stars and planets. He was the first person to tell that Earth is moving around the Sun. In that time many people did not believe him, but he was correct.

Aryabhata also found the value of pi. He says that pi is about 3.1416, which is very close to the real value. That is very amazing because at that time no calculator was there. He also gives the idea of zero and the place value system, which helps in counting big numbers. Without zero today, math will be very hard.

He also helps in trigonometry. He uses sine and cosine in his work. Because of him, India became famous in ancient times for science and math. He showed that India was a very smart country from old times.

3. Brahmagupta

Brahmagupta was another great mathematician of India. He was born in 598 AD. He wrote one book called Brahmasphutasiddhanta. In that book he tells rules about zero and negative numbers. Before him, many people did not know how to use zero properly.

He tells that if we add zero to the number, then the number stays the same. He also tells the rule of minus numbers. For example, minus and minus become plus. These rules are also used today in school. So we can say he makes math easier for future students.

Brahmagupta also worked on algebra. He solves quadratic equations. That is a big topic in math. Even today, children in higher classes are learning quadratic equations. He was a very intelligent person and helped math to grow more and more.

4. Bhaskara II

Bhaskara II, also known as Bhaskaracharya. He was born in 1114 AD. He was very great in algebra and arithmetic. He wrote a famous book called Lilavati. This book was written for his daughter, and it was full of math problems in story form.

In the Lilavati book, he writes sums in an interesting way. So students can learn math with fun. He also writes about calculus ideas. Many people say he found some calculus ideas before other scientists of the world. He was very smart and creative.

Bhaskara II also explains the idea of gravity. He says that Earth has the power to attract objects. This was very good thinking for that time. He was not only a mathematician but also an astronomer.

5. C. R. Rao

C. R. Rao’s full name is Calyampudi Radhakrishna Rao. He was born in 1920. He was a very big statistician of India. Statistics is part of math that deals with data and numbers. He gives many theories in statistics that are used in science and research.

He worked in many universities in India and also in foreign countries. He gets many awards because of his work. Many students study his formulas in statistics today also. He shows that Indian mathematicians are still great in modern times also.

When we read about them, we feel proud that they are from our country. They show that even if life is hard or time is old, brain power and dedication can make big change. We students also should love math and practice every day. Maybe one day we can also become great mathematicians like them.
